크로스워크, 청각적 생태계의 실천에 대하여

 〈크로스워크, 청각적 생태계의 실천에 대하여〉는 사운드를 매개로 환경과 생태, 그리고 문화적 맥락 속에서 형성되는 청각적 실천을 탐색하고 교류하는 온라인 토크 프로그램입니다. 《지구 울림 - 헤르츠앤도우》전시의 작가들과 함께하는 마지막 토크로, 캐나다 문화 예술 분야에서 영향력 있는 활동을 선보이고 있는 우카이 프로젝트(UKAI Projects)의 스튜디오 프로그램 디렉터 루이자 지(Luisa Ji)를 초대해 이야기를 듣습니다. 

먼저, 헤르츠앤도우의 문규철 작가는 새떼의 비행과 개미의 군집, 심지어는 점액 곰팡이와 같은 단세포 유기체의 움직임에서 발견할 수 있는 생명의 질서와 알고리즘을 다루며 인간과 비인간 주체가 함께 작동하는 사운드 감각에 대해 이야기합니다. 이어서 황선정 작가는 기후 변화 이후 절기(節氣)에 따라 형성되는 환경의 리듬과 소리를 기반으로, ‘바이오스피어 리스닝’ 태도에 대해 의견을 더합니다. 루이자 지는 예술과 공공생활이 만나는 지점에서 사운드를 매개로 한 우카이 프로젝트의 공동 창작과 커뮤니티 기반 실천 사례를 보여줍니다.

 또 제도적으로 안정적인 사운드 기반을 마련하고 있는 캐나다를 비롯해 북미권과 유럽, 아시아 등 서로 다른 지역의 사운드 작업 환경과 현황을 살피며 청각적 생태계의 실천 방향에 대해 논의하고자 합니다. 이를 통해 생물적·기술적·사회적 리듬이 교차하는 ‘청각적 생태계’를 하나의 관계적 장으로서 사유해 보고자 합니다. 관심 있는 많은 분들의 참여 바랍니다.

헤르츠앤도우

헤르츠앤도우는 사운드 환경과 청취 감각의 변화에 관심을 갖고 연구·실험하는 리서치 랩이자 레이블, 아티스트 콜렉티브입니다. 사운드 아트와 기술, 포스트 인공지능 시대의 사운드 시스템에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 공간·환경·기계·인간이 상호작용하는 청취 구조를 개발하고 이를 몰입형 환경으로 구현하곤 합니다. 또 비인간 종과의 공존, 기후 위기와 같은 범지구적 주제 안에서 사운드를 언어로 한 포스트 휴먼 청취 감각을 탐색합니다.

루이자 지(우카이 스튜디오 프로그램 디렉터)

 루이자 지(Luisa Ji)는 공공적 상상력, 디지털 전환, 돌봄의 시스템이 교차하는 지점에서 활동하는 크리에이티브 전략가이자 문화 기획자입니다. 그녀가 스튜디오 디렉터로 이끌고 있는 우카이 프로젝트는 캐나다를 기반으로 다양한 참여형 예술 실천을 만들고 있는 비영리 단체입니다. 이들은 여러 지역(캐나다 전역은 물론 이집트, 멕시코, 말라위, 중국, 일본, 스위스, 독일, 나이지리아, 홍콩, 아이슬란드, 대만 등)에 걸쳐 네트워크를 만들고 협업합니다. 또 동시대 기술과 생태, 사회적 조건이 얽힌 문제를 다루며 미래로 나아갈 방법을 함께 만들어가고 있습니다. 

Crosswalk: On the Practice of Auditory Ecology is an online talk program that explores forms of listening shaped across environmental, ecological, and cultural contexts through sound as a medium. As the final talk accompanying the exhibition Sonic Planet – Hertz and Dough, the program brings together the exhibiting artists with Luisa Ji, Studio Program Director of UKAI Projects, an influential arts organization based in Canada.

Moon Gyuchul (Hertz and Dough) will begin by discussing patterns and algorithms of life observed in phenomena such as flocking birds, ant colonies, and even single-celled organisms like slime mold, considering sound as a sensory field in which human and non-human agents operate together. Hwang Sunjeong will then reflect on “biosphere listening,” drawing from environmental rhythms and seasonal shifts shaped in the context of climate change. Luisa Ji will share UKAI Projects’ collaborative and community-based practices, presenting examples of sound-based work situated at the intersection of art and public life.

The discussion will also look across different regional contexts―including Canada, North America, Europe, and Asia―where sound-based practices are supported by varying institutional and cultural infrastructures. Through this, the program considers how an “auditory ecology” can be understood as a relational field where biological, technological, and social rhythms intersect.

Hertz and Dough

Hertz and Dough is a research lab, label, and artist collective that investigates sound environments and evolving modes of listening. Their work engages with sound art, technology, and post-AI sonic systems, developing immersive structures of listening shaped through the interaction of space, environment, machines, and human presence. They also explore posthuman listening in relation to global issues such as multispecies coexistence and climate crisis.

Luisa Ji (UKAI Studio Program Director)

Luisa Ji is a creative strategist and cultural producer working at the intersection of public imagination, digital transformation, and systems of care. As Studio Program Director of UKAI Projects, she supports artists and institutions in expanding their practices through collaborative, participatory frameworks. Based in Canada, UKAI Projects operates internationally, building networks and projects across diverse regions―including Egypt, Mexico, Malawi, China, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Iceland, and Taiwan―while addressing the entangled conditions of technology, ecology, and society.
