배영화성 : 등뒤에서 오는 울림 Echoes from the Back
"미군기지촌에는 1990년대 후반까지 사진관 배경화와 영화관 광고그림을 그려 납품하던 화가들이 존재했다. 그들이 제작한 배경화는 사진관에서 이상적 풍경을 구성하며, 미군과 지역주민들의 삶 속에 시각적 욕망과 미적 감각을 투사하는 장치로 기능했다. 이번 전시에 소개되는 배경화는 1963년부터 2024년까지 보산동에서 운영된 현대사진관에서 사용되었던 것으로, 미군과 클럽 노동 여성들을 주요 고객으로 하며 기지촌의 시각적 환경을 형성해 온 이미지들이다. 작가는 이 배경화들을 통해 기지촌에 축적된 사회적·시각적 층위가 예술적 해석의 대상으로 어떻게 전환되는지를 살핀다."
최원준 작가의 작품 <배영화성 : 등뒤에서 오는 울림 Echoes from the Back>은 해당 배경화에서 촬영된 사진아카이브를 기반으로 재구성된 작업으로, 작품 앞에서 작가는 관람객의 스마트폰을 이용해 사진을 촬영합니다. 관람객은 가족, 연인, 친구와 함께 사진을 촬영하는 경험을 통해 작가의 작업 세계를 체험하게 되며, 촬영된 이미지는 개인적 기억을 넘어 온라인 환경으로 확장되어 공유됩니다. 이는 과거 사진관이 수행했던 초상 생산의 방식이 오늘날 디지털 환경 속에서 어떻게 변형되고 지속되는지를 보여줍니다.

참여 방법
1. 2전시실 앞에서 스태프와 함께 대기 명단과 함께 촬영 동의서를 작성한다. (선착순)
2. 촬영 순서를 기다리며 작가의 작품을 감상한다.
3. 입장 순서가 되면, 안내를 따라 작가의 방으로 이동한다.
4. 최원준 작가에게 스마트폰을 건넨다.
5. 최원준 작가가 직접 각자의 스마트폰으로 사진을 촬영해 준다. (5분 내외)
6. 촬영된 사진을 살펴보고 마음에 드는 사진 한 장을 고른다.
7. 아래 해시태그를 걸고, 작가가 촬영한 사진과 오늘의 소감을 SNS에 업로드한다.

Baeyeonghwaseong: Echoes from the Back
“Until the late 1990s, painters in the U.S. military camptown of Dongducheon produced and supplied photographic backdrops and hand-painted cinema billboards. The backdrops they created formed idealized landscapes behind wedding and commemorative portraits, functioning as devices that projected visual desire and aesthetic sensibility into the lives of both U.S. soldiers and local residents. The backdrop paintings presented in this exhibition were used at Hyundai Photo Studio, which operated in Bosan-dong, Dongducheon, from 1963 to 2024. Serving U.S. soldiers and women working in nearby clubs as its main clientele, the studio’s images played a role in shaping the visual environment of the camptown. Through these backdrop paintings, CHE onejoon examines how the social and visual layers accumulated in the camptown are transformed into subjects of artistic interpretation.”
CHE’s work Baeyeonghwaseong: Echoes from the Back is a reconfigured project based on an archive of images originally photographed against these backdrop paintings. In front of the work, the artist will take commemorative photographs using visitors’ smartphones. Through the experience of being photographed together with family members, partners, or friends, visitors are invited to engage directly with the artist’s practice. The resulting images extend beyond private memory and are shared in online spaces, suggesting how the portrait-making function once performed by photo studios has been transformed and continues in today’s digital environment.

Based on public SNS posts uploaded during the festival, ten participants will be selected by lottery after the festival to receive a copy of the 2026 Seoul Photo Festival catalogue. How to Participate
- 1. At the entrance to Gallery 2, sign the waiting list and photo consent form with a staff member. (First come, first served.)
- 2. Wait for your turn while viewing the artist’s work.
- 3. When it is your turn, enter to the artist’s room.
- 4. Hand your smartphone to CHE Onejoon. Artist will personally take your photograph using your phone. (Approx. 5 minutes)
- 5. Review the photos and choose your favorite image.
- 6. Upload the commemorative photo taken by the artist, along with your impressions of the day, on SNS using the hashtags below:
