책을 통해 동시대 미술 담론에 쉽게 다가가는 프로그램
책시선들은 동시대 미술의 주요 담론과 이론을 다루는 책을 필자, 역자 등과 함께 읽는 대화 프로그램입니다.
2026년에는 로런 벌랜트의 『잔인한 낙관』, 요하나 헤드바의 『우리가 언제 죽을지, 어떻게 들려줄까』를 중심으로 우리를 지탱하면서도 소진시키는 관계와 구조를 돌아보며 감각과 연대의 가능성을 함께 생각해보고자 합니다.
■ 세션 ① 〈로런 벌랜트의 『잔인한 낙관』 읽기〉
우리는 사랑, 가족, 일, 정치가 더 나은 삶을 만들어줄 것이라 믿어왔습니다. 그러나 지금은 그런 약속이 더는 삶을 안정적으로 지탱하지 못하고, 오히려 불안을 남깁니다. 『잔인한 낙관』은, 그럼에도 불구하고 왜 우리가 기대를 쉽게 놓지 못하는지, 무너진 약속 이후의 현재를 사람들은 어떤 감각과 태도로 버텨내는지를 묻는 책입니다. 이 프로그램은 벌랜트가 말하는 ‘좋은 삶’, ‘잔인한 낙관’, ‘정동’의 개념을 함께 읽으며 오늘의 삶을 더 섬세하게 이해할 언어를 찾아가는 자리입니다.

박미선은 현대미국문학, 페미니즘, 퀴어 이론을 연구하고 가르친다. 『페미니즘 : 차이와 사이』(2011), 『오드리 로드』(2025) 등 젠더 연구의 주요 개념과 쟁점을 다룬 책을 쓰고, 『잔인한 낙관』(2024)을 비롯해 『포스트식민이성 비판』(2005), 『젠더 스터디』(2024), 『우울: 공적감정』(2025) 등 포스트식민 담론과 젠더, 정동 이론의 주요 저작을 번역해오고 있다. 이브 세즈윅의 『터칭 필링』, 시앤 나이의 『못난 느낌들』과 『우리 시대의 미학 범주 : 우스꽝스러움, 귀여움, 흥미로움』을 번역 중이며 2027년과 2028년에 출간 예정이다.

■ 세션 ② 〈요하나 헤드바의 『우리가 언제 죽을지, 어떻게 들려줄까: 고통, 장애 그리고 파멸에 대하여』 읽기〉
성공과 치유를 당연한 기준으로 삼는 지금, 상처와 결핍, 실패를 다른 시선으로 읽어보는 자리입니다. 요하나 헤드바의 『우리가 언제 죽을지, 어떻게 들려줄까』를 읽으며 아픈 몸과 불안정한 삶이 예외가 아닌 오늘 우리의 현실과 연결되어 있는 것을 살펴봅니다. 고통을 말하는 일, 도움을 주고받는 일, 접근성을 요구하는 일이 왜 중요한지 돌아보며 자신과 타인을 이해하는 언어와 연대의 감각을 찾아봅니다.

○ 네비게이터 : 양효실 (미학자, 비평가)
양효실은 서울대학교 미학과 박사학위를 받았다. 미학자이자 비평가로 페미니즘과 퀴어를 삶과 예술의 감각으로 읽고 쓴다. 『불구의 삶, 사랑의 말』(2017), 『대화 비평』(2025)을 썼고, 주디스 버틀러의 『주디스 버틀러, 지상에서 함께 산다는 것』(2016), 요하나 헤드바의 『우리가 언제 죽을지, 어떻게 들려줄까』(2025) 등 젠더이론의 정치성을 다룬 책을 번역해왔다.

■ 레퍼런스 라이브러리 프로그램 소개
서울시립 미술아카이브 레퍼런스 라이브러리는 책을 매개로 미술에 대한 사유와 경험을 확장하는 시각예술 전문 도서 공간입니다. 책을 통해 다양한 예술의 실천을 만나며 미술의 안과 밖을 넓게 살펴봅니다.
올해부터는 레퍼런스 라이브러리의 새로운 프로그램, 〈책생각들〉, 〈책생활들〉, 〈책시선들〉 을 진행합니다.
〈책생각들〉은 기획자, 작가, 연구자들이 각자의 시선으로 책을 분류하고 짧은 글을 더해, 미술을 새롭게 바라보는 감각을 제안합니다. 〈책생활들〉은 폭넓은 분야의 도서를 저자와 함께 읽으며, 다양한 형식을 통해 읽기의 방식을 확장하고 서로 연결되는 경험을 만들어갑니다. 〈책시선들〉은 동시대 미술의 담론과 이론을 다루는 책을 필자, 역자 등과 함께 읽으며, 책과 작품, 사회를 잇는 시선을 탐색합니다. 이를 통해 미술을 읽는 다양한 시선과 감각을 함께 나누고자 합니다.

An invitation to engage with contemporary art discourse through books
Check―Views is a conversation program that opens up key ideas and debates in contemporary art through reading and discussion with authors, translators, and other contributors.
In 2026, the program will center on Lauren Berlant’s Cruel Optimism and Johanna Hedva’s How to Tell When We Will Die, exploring the relationships and structures that both sustain and deplete us, while making space to think together about feeling, endurance, and the possibilities of solidarity.
■ Session 1: Reading Lauren Berlant’s Cruel Optimism
We have long believed that love, family, work, and politics would lead us toward a better life. Yet today, these promises no longer offer stable support and often leave us with a sense of anxiety instead. Cruel Optimism asks why, despite this, we find it so difficult to let go of our expectations, and how people endure the present after such promises have unraveled. This program offers a space to read together Berlant’s concepts of the “good life,” “cruel optimism,” and “affect,” and to search for a more nuanced language through which to understand life today.

○ Navigator : Park Mi Sun(Professor, Department of English Language and Culture, Hanshin University)
Park Mi Sun researches and teaches modern American literature, feminism, and queer theory. She has written books on major concepts and issues in gender studies, including Feminism: Difference and Interstices (2011) and Audre Lorde (2025), and has translated major works in postcolonial discourse, gender studies, and affect theory, including Cruel Optimism (2024), A Critique of Postcolonial Reason (2005), Gender Studies (2024), and Depression: A Public Feeling (2025). She is currently translating Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s Touching Feeling : Affect, Pedagogy, Performativity, as well as Sianne Ngai’s Ugly Feelings and Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting, which are scheduled for publication in 2027 and 2028.
■ Session 2: Reading Johanna Hedva’s How to Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom
At a time when success and healing are treated as unquestioned norms, this session invites participants to read injury, lack, and failure from a different perspective. Through a reading of Johanna Hedva’s How to Tell When We Will Die, the program considers how the realities of ill bodies and precarious lives are not exceptions, but are deeply connected to the conditions of life today. Reflecting on why it matters to speak about pain, to give and receive help, and to demand accessibility, the session seeks a language for understanding ourselves and others, as well as a renewed sense of solidarity.

○ Navigator: Yang Hyo-sil (Aesthetician and Critic)
Yang Hyo-sil received her PhD in aesthetics from Seoul National University. An aesthetician and critic, She reads and writes about feminism and queerness as sensibilities that traverse both life and art. She is the author of Disabled Lives, Words of Love (2017) and Dialogical Criticism (2025), and has translated books addressing the politics of gender theory, including Judith Butler’s Judith Butler, Living Together on Earth (2016) and Johanna Hedva’s How to Tell When We Will Die (2025).

■ Reference Library Program
The Reference Library at AA SeMA is a specialized visual art library that expands artistic thought and experience through books. It engages with diverse artistic practices and offers a broader view of art, both within and beyond the field itself.
Beginning this year, the Reference Library presents three new programs: Check―Minds, Check―Lives, Check―Views.
Check―Minds invites curators, artists, and researchers to classify books from their own perspectives and add short texts, offering new ways of seeing art. Check―Lives brings readers together with authors to explore books from a wide range of fields, expanding the practice of reading through diverse formats and creating opportunities for connection. Check―Views centers on books that engage major discourses and theories in contemporary art, bringing readers into conversation with authors, translators, and other contributors to explore perspectives that connect books, artworks, and society. Through these programs, the Reference Library hopes to share a wider range of sensibilities and perspectives for reading art.
