Description of the Artwork

Han Man-Young (b. 1946) received his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Painting at Hongik University and master’s degree from Art Education Department at Konkuk University Graduate School of Education in 1972 and 1983, respectively. He held several solo exhibitions since his first at Korea Gallery in 1979, and participated in various group exhibitions at home and abroad including Gwangju Biennale, Bienal de Sao Paulo, International Festival of Painting Cagnes-sur-Mer, and “Korean Contemporary Art-Trend of 70’s” at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan in 1984. He served on the faculty of the Painting Department at Sungshin Women’s University and is a professor emeritus in the College of Arts at Sungshin Women’s University. Han Man-Young has dealt with immense themes of time and space in his “Origin of the Space” and “Reproduction of Time” series. His visual idioms are the appropriation of images from classical masterpieces in art history and reconfiguration with an object on a single canvas. The randomly arranged images, severed from their original meanings and aura as a masterpiece, forge new relations in time and space among themselves on the canvas. At this moment, enormous time and space differences between each image are incorporated into a single space and time: the here and now.
