Description of the Artwork
Choi Wool-ga uses daily stories as a motif for his art. Not all daily lives are pleasant. Choi often captures people with angry look, although his general tendency is a pleasant interpretation of people’s daily lives. He also likes to spread indefinite images one after the other, lively mixing them with brilliant colors, people who look like cartoon characters, pretty decorations and dynamic brush strokes. Choi’s works are often compared with those by Jean Dubuffet and Jean Michel Basquiat although the actions are gentler than those of the two. He presents radical forms, but they are recognizable to a certain degree. In this work, however, Choi shows that there has been a fundamental change since the works made between the late 1980s and 1990s which are characterized by brilliant colors and distinctive textures. The change may be described by “the transition from colors to lines”. In his earlier works lines were subordinate to colors, but in the works made in the 2000s the opposite is the case. That is why some viewers find the elements of graffiti in these new works.
