The SeMA Nam June Paik Memorial House is a space that commemorates the artist Nam June Paik (1932~2006). Built on the site of the house where the world-renowned artist spent his childhood from 1937 to 1950, the Nam June Paik Memorial House restores the original single-story traditional Korean hanok house built in 1960 to trace the internationally acclaimed artist’s origins. The Nam June Paik Cafe, operated by local residents, provides a comfortable space for visitors to rest. (Picture: ⓒ Kim YongKwan)

To open Nam June Paik Memorial House, the Seoul Museum of Art purchased the 1960s hanok house remaining on the site where the late artist spent his youth and, from 2016 to 2017, remodeled the house into a new exhibition space. A single-story wooden building covering 87.84㎡ in area, it presents special exhibitions on the life and art of Nam June Paik. The memorial house also includes the Nam June Paik Cafe, which is operated by local self-governing communities in the Changsin and Sungin areas.
The work of remodeling the traditional tile-roofed house into the Nam June Paik Memorial House was focused on preserving the original features of the house dating back to the 1960s while replacing deteriorated members with new ones. It also aimed to express respect to the memories of the time and space of Changsin-dong in the past while trying to avoid any intentional creation of old architectural features. The grid pattern floor linking the central courtyard with the interior of the house is designed to stimulate the imagination of the viewers to easily accept various changes of the geometrical pattern.
Nam June Paik Memorial House’s permanent exhibition "Tomorrow, the World Will Be Beautiful" is installed throughout the entrance, courtyard, and exhibition halls
Run by a cooperative of local residents, Nam June Paik Cafe is a rest area for the museum audience and neighbors and is furnished with books about Nam June Paik.
