Paik Ground Seoul Museum of Art is located in Changshin-dong where Nam June Paik (1932–2006) lived from 1937 to 1950. This site was developed by remodeling a traditional Korean hanok house built there in 1960. Open to the public in March 2017, Paik Ground SeMA based on his artistic and philosophical ideas runs exhibitions and public programs to explore Paik’s art and life, and the works of contemporary artists who could broaden his experimental spirit today. Paik Ground SeMA is located in Changshin-dong where Nam June Paik (1932–2006) lived from 1937 to 1950. This site was developed by remodeling a traditional Korean hanok house built there in 1960. In the exhibition space and courtyard, exhibitions and programs are presented that explore Nam June Paik’s life, art, and influence on his contemporaries, while a cafe run by a local community group offers visitors a comfortable place to rest.
For the Paik Ground SeMA building, deteriorated parts were carefully dismantled, repaired, and reassembled to preserve the original form of the single-story hanok constructed in 1960. It also aimed to express respect to the memories of the time and space of Changsin-dong in the past while trying to avoid any intentional creation of old architectural features. The grid pattern floor linking the central courtyard with the interior of the house is designed to stimulate the imagination of the viewers to easily accept various changes of the geometrical pattern.
Visitors are free to view the exhibition Megatron Rhapsody, which opened on June 17, 2025.
Run by a cooperative of local residents, the Nam June Paik Cafe provides somewhere for visitors to relax and houses a collection of books on Nam June Paik to help them understand the artist.
