Seo-Seoul Museum of Art Inaugural Exhibition Mneme Topos - Carving of Conception Dream
Carving of Conception Dream, an inaugural special project by Moojin Brothers initiated with the birth of Seo-Seoul Museum of Art, continues in Chapter 2 of Mneme Topos from April 28.
Carving of Conception Dream is a workshop-based exhibition project in which the conception dream stories of an older generation of longtime residents of Seoul’s southwestern region are translated into language-images and realized as wooden seals and a video work. A “conception dream” represents the dream of another―inscribed throughout a person’s life as their origin story, even though they did not experience it themselves. It is also a form of remembering through which a community interprets and shares in the birth of an individual.
Beginning alongside the opening of Seo-Seoul Museum of Art, approximately 80 senior participants joined the Carving of Conception Dream - Workshop, sharing their own conception dreams and life stories while creating drawings of symbolic dream scenes deeply engraved in their memories.
The language-images collected through the workshop are carved into wooden seals and rendered as a video work by Moojin Brothers, each infused with the folds of time. Presented as part of Mneme Topos, these works unfold within the exhibition as layered inscriptions of memory and time.
Through the Carving of Conception Dream, stories once shared in anticipation of a life’s birth resurface as precious fragments of memory, unfolding alongside the museum’s first steps.
Seo SeMA, the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art, is the first public art museum serving Seoul’s southwestern region and is dedicated to the exploration of new media art. The museum presents exhibitions and research programs that experiment with emerging artistic media and languages, while placing particular emphasis on arts education that nurtures the next generation of artists and creative practitioners.
Grounded in ongoing research into the culture and context of the southwestern region of Seoul, Seo SeMA seeks to bring forward diverse issues and practices that have yet to be fully visible. Through this work, the museum aims to generate critical discourse and propose open, experimental approaches to exhibition-making that expand interdisciplinary dialogue and regional networks.
