HWANG Kyumin establishes a system for analogizing Dong-Yang-Hwa (Oriental Painting) and incorporates contemporary Seo-hwa (calligraphy and painting) within it. The core framework of this system revolves around "Mr. Hwang," an imaginary art enthusiast with a long-standing appreciation for paintings. He creates "manuals" as a means to study original works and uses these manuals as "units," such as dots and strokes, to generate new paintings. In recent developments, Mr. Hwang has expanded the scope of his manuals beyond his own paintings to include Seo-hwa works by other artists.
Hwang published his manuals in his solo exhibition Hwang’s Manual of Eternal Classics (OCI Museum of Art, 2022) and through collaborations with contemporary Seo-hwa artists Park Sohyun, Kim Seung-gyu, Song Jean, and Cha Seungean.
