SeMA-Hana Art Criticism Awards 2021

We infuse rich imagination into our everyday lives, blurring the boundaries between art and daily life.

The SeMA-Hana Art Awards was jointly established by the Seoul Museum of Art and Hana Financial Group with the purpose of promoting the development of the Korean art field and broadening the understanding of modern art. The awards include the Media Art Awards and Criticism Awards.

Yeonsook Lee

Yeonsook Lee (a.k.a. ‘Rita’) is studying for a master’s degree in comparative literature, after she got a bachelor’s degree in aesthetics and art theory. Since 2015, Lee has been writing numerous articles about culture and visual art through diverse publications. As a researcher and art critic, her interests reside in the style of resistance which is found in feminist art, queer art, and subculture by minorities. As a member of the editorial and curatorial collective, Agrafa Society, she co-published a web journal, Seminar (www.zineseminar.com), and co-organized the series of lectures and texts on feminism, OFF (https://off-magazine.net/).

"Touching innards of the 'abject' feelings―on Mire Lee: Carriers" analyzes the substance, actuality, and affect of feminist and queer artists’ works through the concept of the ‘abject’, attempting to save the senses of the others and minorities from the hatred caused by the perception of the normality. The judging panel commented: that the article demonstrates “concentration and rich interpretation in the process of contemplating artworks”; it is “persuasive, very interesting, and appealing due to its great refinement of logic.” The honor went to Yeonsook Lee as the judges found a verdict of “her potential and determined attitude admirable” in the interview phase. Articles on freely chosen themes: studies on artists, criticism on exhibitions or exhibition history, criticism on systems, criticism on themes / up to 70 pages (using manuscript paper)

Procedure of Evaluation
Preliminary Screening: Individual judges evaluate the submitted articles and assign a grade of A, B, C, or F
Secondary Screening: A panel of judges discusses and evaluates the submitted articles and selects 5 finalists
Tertiary Screening: A panel of judges holds individual interviews and selects the winner
*A blind evaluation method is employed during the screening sessions
