"To Be Differently or To See Differently: Notes on Kim Beom."
The SeMA-Hana Criticism Awards winner Lee Jin-sil’s work “Between Revelation and Doubt: To Dissect Technocracy with Allegories of Faith” aims to read the middle layers hidden in the artwork, which by their nature are not easy to comprehend, as well as their meanings through criticism. According to the judges, “through the video by Kim Sil-bi, Lee Jin-sil juxtaposed the contemporary media theory with outdated religious symbols and thoroughly analyzed how the work indicated that the capitalist system is maldistributed throughout modern society,” and her expertise in writing, developed to convince readers while maintaining her critical views and willingness to pursue criticism, was enough to captivate the judges. The honor went to Lee Jin-sil after her writing was favorably reviewed by the judges based on the excellent balance of the writer’s theoretical introspection, skillful writing, and critical view towards the era. (Quotes taken from the evaluation made by judges Woo Jeong-ah, Seo Dong-jin, and Jeong Hyeon)
The SeMA-Hana Criticism Awards winner Jang Ji-han’s work “To Be Differently or To See Differently: Notes on Kim Beom” emphasizes the critical importance that the artist Kim Beom had at the time in 2019 and boldly reveals the true nature of the works of Kim Beom as an artist who betrays and deconstructs modern characteristics. The judges were deeply impressed by Jang Ji-han’s ability to accurately describe each and every work, without being swayed by existing art theory, as well as his ability to expand the crevice between phenomenological perusal and epistemological perusal. In particular, the judges gave high scores in recognition of his “originality and ambition in interpretation” and his “brevity and freshness in interpreting the ’90s from a new viewpoint.” (Quotes from the evaluation made by judges Woo Jeong-ah, Cho Seon-ryeong, and Jeong Hyeon)
