The Photography Seoul Museum of Art (Photo SeMA) will hold an international seminar titled A Place for Photography, ahead of its opening. Scheduled for September 3 at the Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, the seminar will commemorate the establishment of the Photo SeMA, Korea’s first public photography museum. It will also serve as a place to share the visions of international photography institutions in Europe and Asia, along with their programs for contemporary photographers. The invited speakers, who represent the institutions set to open in the near future, including Photo SeMA, will present their operation plans and explore future opportunities for exchanges between domestic and international photographers.
Speakers include Gwen Lee, the Director and Co-founder of the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) and DECK Photography Art Centre, which is set to open in a new space in 2026; Felix Hoffmann, who runs Austria’s largest photography biennale and is the Artistic Director of FOTO ARSENAL WIEN, which is set to reopen in 2026; RongRong&inri, Co-founders of Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, China’s prominent independent contemporary photography institution, and co-hosts Jimei×Arles International Photo Festival; Peter Baki, Director of the Hungarian Museum of Photography; and Jung Hee Han, Director of the Photo SeMA.
In addition, the architects Mladen Jadric (Jadric Architektur ZT GmbH) and Yoon Geun-ju (1990uao), who designed the space of the Photo SeMA, will explain the entire construction process of the museum, which was developed through their collaboration from the design competition in 2019 to the present.

The Buk-Seoul Museum of Art coexists with its local community. Located in Nowon-gu―an area whose name is derived from the “Reed Hill” nearby―the museum is an open structure with its entrance connected to a park. In addition to outdoor sculpture exhibitions, it offers maze-like galleries, an art library, a cafe, and a multipurpose hall. These spaces host a variety of programs for families, which make up the majority of visitors to this museum.
